AHHH! How come I have stars above my acctivity?

Well? Does everyone else have them too, and I can only see my own?

Titusfied 2003-09-08 12:50 PM

I don't see em, maybe its because your on X79 style.... ?

Kaneda 2003-09-08 12:52 PM

There are 5, the first one is red, the next three are yellow and the last one is blank.

Edit:
No X79 isn't the deal, and I figured out when I post the stars fill up, so its a gauge to show when my activity is going up I suppose. But no one else has this?

J_iceman 2003-09-08 12:54 PM

i dont see'em :-(

Titusfied 2003-09-08 12:57 PM

WHoa, I just noticed it on mine as well. I can't see anyone else's though, maybe it is for the viewing eyes of the member only. :)

I have 5 too, first one red, last four yellow. :)

Kaneda 2003-09-08 01:01 PM

LOL. You didn't hear anything about this? Crazy...Ok, just wondering if I was being used as guinea pig.

J_iceman 2003-09-08 01:03 PM

hey i see it also first is red the next 4 is yellow......too much stars (did i get hit ^_^)

Chruser 2003-09-08 01:10 PM

Try hovering your mouse over them. ;)

0nyx 2003-09-08 01:11 PM

What are the stars for???

I just had them miraculously appear too!

WetWired 2003-09-08 01:11 PM

Yeah, it's only on Synthesis because I had to do something and so didn't get a chance to add it to other styles.

It works like this:
On your own posts, you can see a bar that indicates your activity for the day. When you have filled the bar, further posting will do nothing to increase your overall activity. The red star is the points for visiting, the yellow stars are points for posting. Mouseovering reveals these details.

The reason for this is several posts of "I posted a million posts today and my bar hasn't gone up". There is a simple reason for this; the activity bar itself is updated every midnight CST. This removes flutuation due to removal of points from the day 28 days ago only to be added again at random times on the current day. The new bar makes it obvious when further posting will have no further effect on your activity bar.

It's only above your activity in your posts because I know most of you would just spam a few extra times before you would go to the trouble to go the forum index or your CP to find this info.

"All these stars" total less than 2 KB when combined.

No way. I'm on cable and it's exactly the same. Besides it only has to load your stars. BTW 4 post a day is kinda lame. It sould be like 8 atleast, half a star per post.

The final decsion on that will come in a month, after all the data is collected for this stuff to work entirely as planned. In any case, I highly doubt the max counted posts will exceed 6.

still though i remember it going faster BEFORE all these changes.....it goes so slow that when i post, it double post :-( is it the zelaron network? i dont get any other problems in other forums!

RoboticSilence 2003-09-08 02:24 PM

Hmm... test, I guess.

uncapped 2003-09-08 02:45 PM

I don't think it's really nessecary. It's just going to give people another reason to want to spam. They'll try to post until all of them are full. I say trash it.

RoboticSilence 2003-09-08 02:49 PM

You only get stars for your first four posts.

That is the exact intent. They will post untill they are full (4 posts), not untill they have flooded the new posts list with useless replies. The only reason, then, for more than 4 posts per day to appear is if they all have purpose. With or without the new bar, people are trying to get "maximum activity". This way they know when to stop, helping to reinforce the purposes of the activity bar.

Dunno. It may have been going slightly slower for awhile because of me generating fake visit logs based off of postings, then after that as I forced an activity recalculation based off this new data, but at this point anything in the new threads should be clean and load at normal speed. The only reason for slow down would be if you've been thread digging.

Warning: Long Technical Discussion Follows
The activity for a user is only recalculated the first time it is needed each day. Generally, this means a noticable slowdown at midnight, as every user in the first few threads loaded is recalculated, but within about 100 thread views, the majority of active posters should be covered and only one or two users per thread should need recalculation. If you thread dig, however, and hit threads rich in inactive members, you will still encounter slowdown. Unfortunately, due to the architechture of vB2, a query is performed for each user in a thread to determine whether or not to recalculate; I could remove this at the cost of recalculating the same user several times if they posted alot in the thread. Hmm...

Adrenachrome 2003-09-08 10:08 PM

What a fucking brilliant idea.

WW I'm on 56k and I look at the threads all the way back untill I see my last few posts from the day before, are those threads old enough to cause the lag, if so I haven't noticed it a bit, I think you should leave the query the way it is.

Titusfied 2003-09-08 11:52 PM

Ahh, nice, thank God all the discrenpancy is over with... Test...

D2Maul 2003-09-09 02:16 AM

Rurouni Storm 2003-09-09 08:53 AM

Randuin 2003-09-09 09:04 AM

ocean has them too, great stuff, now you can monitor yourself!

Chruser 2003-09-09 09:27 AM

The only downside is that most members will likely never find out about this neat feature.
