No, you can get one now.

Just make sure the 'yes' by "Use Custom Avatar" is selected.

i got that when i tried to link to the spam avatar on my website. Then i just uploaded one on my HD and it works fine now. They have pretty loose requirements, i dont see why your img wouldnt work (256x256 and 50k).

Is it too large maybe?

Alot of forums limit them to a certain size.

256 by 256 is pretty big, but that might be the problem
