Basically that is the average mentality of a human being. Lots of things that we do are usually unnecessary, but we do them anyways.

Bread doesn't taste good anymore - add more sugar to it so it tastes more like cake
Talking on AIM or some message board
Strawberries taste bland - douse them in chocolate or whipped cream
Heck, even listening to music really serves no purpose
Adding carbonation and sugar/whatever other sweetener to water
Buying a 1,000 dollar video game system
Buying HDTVs over CRTs

And the list could go on and on.

So, then, whenever that person still ain't happy.. I guess he/she starts taking drugs or smokes or whatever even if that person knows in the end it will probably harm them (assuming it isn't already harming the person).

I'd sooner smoke weed than a cig. NEVER will I smoke a cigarette. I wouldn't put a second thought into some pot though though.

Smoking tobacco definitely kills you off. I don't think that Weed does, and if so, not with the same drastic effects.

I was thinking more of the ones that say "Kill Kill KILL your brain cells"... but yeah. Same difference.

Or the one that always tells me to pack it up. That voice sucks. Or the one that tells me I should jackoff to porn at that instance.

I've always hated the one that tells me I don't have the imagination for two imaginary friends.

And the one that says "I'm not schizophrenic, but the other me is" is just plain creepy.

I guess there's really no definitive answer to that really. I remember some druggie telling me his concoctions solved all his problems. Oh really? I asked him what those problems were, and he really couldn't answer. So I dunno.

I just like getting high because it gives me an entirely different mindset. It's nice to see from certain perspectives once in awhile.

If you asked me, my response would be that we have no purpose except for a self-defined one.

Our animalistic purpose in life is to eat other organisms, sleep, and reproduce.

But our human side of us has other purposes to fulfill.

Hmm I think playing video games is somewhere in the purpose of life. No question.

Dawkins would argue that our sole purpose biologically is not the perpetuation of the species itself, but rather the protection and propagation of the gene.
