I don't think so. If they're not a member, then there has to be some log to keep track of the number of posts each guest has made which would effectively be making every IP that hits the site a limited member.

So it wouldn't be possible to send a cookie when they get to 10 posts that stops them posting again??

Some sites do it if, say, the give a person 3 tries to do something and they can't try again after 3 tries...

You got any idea what vB3.5 has in store for us??

Medieval Bob 2005-05-25 12:25 PM

Oh, well if it's just cookie based, that's not going to stop many people from multi-posting as a guest.

I don't think guest posting should be allowed at all. I don't see a need for anon posting, but I think if it gets implemented, the user should be registered to have to post period.

vB3.5 is mostly an architectural change. Many hacks will not have to be reinstalled for each 3.5.x because of a new hack hooks system, and hacks and add-on software will be able to do things such as generate a post with a single function call.

User level changes include AJAX stuff, which will allow you to change thread titles inline from forumdisplay (before time expires, if you're not a mod), and to quick reply without a page load; moderators will be able to do a lot of moderation stuff with fewer page loads. Also, vB3.5 brings persistant read marking, so you can check the forums even if you only have a minute or two and come back later and pick up where you left off.

I like the sound of the quick checking thingy...

I've noticed I haven't said my opinion on the anonymous posting...:p...it sounds like a good idea...maybe there could be a little tick box near the thingy bits when making the new thread saying that you'd like to be anonymous...the only problem with it being that we are all used to each other's writing...so if you saw an anonymous post in there with more punctuation than you can shake a stick at, you'll instantly know it's mine etc...

LiveWire 2005-05-26 02:19 PM

And if we saw a post with correct punctuation, we would know it's WetWired. :p
