Right, so you need invites to get G-mail. Correct? So, how did the first ever subscribers get invites if there was no-one with an account to invite them?

Aparently, there are other google services that you need an account for. They probably just selected some of those users.

most likly it was subscribers to ads by google.

There are other e-mail services out there which seem to be better -- though I don't really know how good Gmail is.
