[17:20] WetWired: In DS9, during the Dominion War, why do the Galaxy class ships go into battle with their saucers? It makes sense when they do an invasion, because they can use it to house troops, but for a space battle it reduces manuverability and is one more thing to build if the ship is destroied

[17:59] !King_Amazon!: Well, I think separation was generally limited to emergency situations because of the potential complications involved. Perhaps, while it would have been better had they separated them, they chose not to because of the potential risk of taking the ships entirely out of commision.
[18:00] WetWired: Saucer seperation was actually pretty routine in TNG
[18:00] WetWired: The whole point of the saucer was to leave civilians behind when going into battle
[18:01] WetWired: Heck, if separation was so dangerous, why would Picard have Riker redock manually in the first episode?
[18:01] !King_Amazon!: It wasn't "routine" at all
[18:02] WetWired: What I mean is it was never a carefully weighed decision. It was always a "it makes sense to separate", "let's do it" thing
[18:02] !King_Amazon!: No, no it wasn't
[18:02] WetWired: Except in the one case where information was fuzzy because of communication failure
[18:02] !King_Amazon!: "Commander Riker suggested a saucer separation shortly before the Enterprise was sent to investigate a possible Romulan attack on the freighter Batris later that year, although Picard felt it was too early to justify such an action. "
[18:03] WetWired: Name one case when it wasn't, besides that last
[18:04] !King_Amazon!: "Also that year, the USS Enterprise was sent to investigate the destruction of a number of colonies and bases along the border with the Romulan Neutral Zone. Before entering the area, Commander Riker suggested a saucer separation although Picard felt it was too early to justify such an action. (TNG: "The Neutral Zone") "
[18:05] !King_Amazon!: Also, there is an instance where the saucer section was kept in place for battle because of the extra power from the impulse engines
[18:05] !King_Amazon!: "In 2366, Commander Shelby suggested separating the ship and using the saucer to create a distraction for the Borg. Commander Riker rejected the idea, feeling the extra power from the saucer's impulse engines would be of use in the battle."
[18:05] WetWired: Because it's an inconvenience to the crew and the danger is not sure. The mere fact that Riker suggests it in such a situation indicates that it's not a technically weigty issue
[18:06] !King_Amazon!: Well clearly you're more clever than the writers of one of the best series ever
[18:06] !King_Amazon!: GJ WW
[18:07] WetWired: Or maybe they just didn't want to redo the CGI model they had for saucerless combat
[18:07] WetWired: Just like the Defiant-A still has the registry number of the Defiant because they didn't want to update the model
[18:07] !King_Amazon!: Or maybe it makes sense to keep the saucer sections attached but you're being obtuse
[18:11] WetWired: I don't deny that there could be a good reason, but it sure seems strange, especially given Geordi's monologue about the combat capabilies of the separated star drive section in the first episode
[18:11] System: !King_Amazon! has left the chat
[18:12] !King_Amazon!: I don't recall any monologue by Geordi in the first episode
[18:13] !King_Amazon!: http://www.chakoteya.net/nextgen/101.htm feel free to find it and point it out
[18:14] WetWired: Hmm. It was definately one of the earliest episodes
[18:15] !King_Amazon!: I won't argue against your point, anyway. The star drive section is certainly more capable in battle on the surface
[18:15] !King_Amazon!: But there are probably other things that come into play, like what Riker mentions about the impulse drives being useful during combat
[18:19] WetWired: Hmm. Not what I was looking for, but s1e20 Worf: Yes. When relieved of its bulk, the Enterprise becomes an exceptional weapon.
[18:21] WetWired: Die bot, die
