The choices you make outside of gear can all be rapidly changed, so if your character sucks it is for one of two reasons |

Either you don't know how to fucking play, or your gear sucks |

But it's obvious that it is mostly gear because most people are new to the game anyway, and when you upgrade your gear your character is very noticeably improved |

I suppose that could be considered an end-game benefit, since every upgrade you get will feel awesome, but while you are leveling and not finding things nearly as good as what you can (and need to) buy on the auction house, it just makes it feel like you have to spend all of your money on upgrading gear and everything else is basically inconsequential |
